I have been wanting to put up a website for my cake toppers for a long time now, but never had the time when I was juggling between my cake toppers and a full time job.
I always figured once I quit my day job, I would get this website up and running so fast that I would be staring at my sparkling new website within two weeks.
So much for overestimating my own ability. It's been over a month now since I left the security of a full time job and I've just barely got this website up this week. Now if you had a chance to look around the site at the time of this post, you would notice that there's a lot of things missing still with many links going to the so called "coming soon" pages.
It definitely didn't help that I've only just started on this website last week. You are probably thinking, so what have I been doing for the other three weeks that I was off from work? Well I would like to say that I was having a "design dilemma" over the website, but I am not going be too offended if you call it "procrastinating" instead.
The truth is... I spend a good portion of my time just messing with website creation software. The free one that came with my computer has templates that were hard to customize, while building pages from scratch is not only a lot of work but involves constant surprises in the preview windows. I swear, things just don't look the same way they do in the editor once they make it to a web browser.
While I am willing to pay for a better software, the learning curve on the most of them kind of scares me. So instead of working on my website, I went and did easier accomplish-able tasks around the workshop instead. Which was great for my workshop, but not so great for the website.
After three weeks of little progress on the website, I realized that I really should be working on the contents of my website and not so much on the website itself. So I opted for the same options many other artists have already utilized, and that is to simply customize an online blog to serve also as a website.
Now that we are here, I have to say that I am happy that I finally got around to considering this option. While the website is not done yet, and as a blog it will probably always be somewhat of a work in progress, I think I will take "work in progress" anytime as opposed to just a figment of my imagination.
